Operating system is a system software. It is just like the soul of a computer. It is a collection of programs that supervises and controls overall functions of a computer. Operating system also organizes all the data and runs other applications in a computer. It creates a link between a user and the computer. Microsoft Windows is the most widely used operating system for personal computers. Linux, Unix and Mac OS are some of the other operating systems.
